CAES Tour in Idaho Falls  October 6, 2008

The Governor and First Lady begin a tour of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) in Idaho Falls. The Governor was a strong advocate of the
center and helped secure legislative approval for funding the 55,000 square foot research facility. The center is a public-private partnership that includes
the State of Idaho, through partnerships with the Boise State University, Idaho State University and the University of Idaho; as well as the federal
government through the Department of Energy; and a private entity the Battelle Energy Alliance which manages the Idaho National Laboratory.

Nahum Hersom received the Governor’s Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts award. Hersom has been a scoutmaster, archer, taxidermist, lifeguard and folk dancer.  An ornamental hammersmith and hand forger with abilities acquired from 60 years of practice, Hersom is internationally recognized for his repousse`: cold – forming or decorating metal with patterns in relief by hammering and pressing on its reverse side over an iron stake. Gary Keithley receives the Governor’s Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts award. Keithley is a fourth-generation Idahoan from Midvale and was raised on his great grandfather’s ranch still operated by his parents. He has excelled in silversmithing and saddle making. Julie Kilgrow receives the Governor’s Excellence in Arts Administration award. Kilgrow in her four-year tenure as executive and artistic art director at Opera Idaho, used energetic fund-raising to eliminate indebtedness; she revamped programming to include smaller locations and a wider audience and signed first class vocalists, while at the same time casting talented local artists. Kathy Silak, Executive Director of the Idaho Community Foundation, receives the Governor’s Support of the Arts award on behalf of the foundation. Established in Boise in 1988 to enrich the quality of life throughout Idaho, the foundation’s assets have grown to $72 million with money going to every one of Idaho’s 44 counties. Susan Jacklin receives the Governor’s Support of the Arts award. Jacklin is president of Community Building Partners, that was organized in 1996 to save The Old Church in Post Falls. The Jacklin Family Foundation purchased the building. Then the Community Building Partners raised $1.2 million to restore the building and convert it into a cultural and community center. As executive director, Susan devoted much of 10 years to the effort. While the Jacklin's were out of state this year, grateful board members renamed the building: Jacklin Center for Arts & Culture at the Old Church. Photo Credit and Copyright Idaho Publications.

Rick Hansen receives the Governor’s Support of Arts Education award. Hansen is now in his thirty-fifth year at Madison High School and Madison Junior High School in Rexburg. Since 1974 as director, Hansen has taken the orchestra programs from 7 students to nearly 300. Hansen was a finalist for the Idaho’s Brightest Stars Award in 2002 and 2003. In 2005 his Madison orchestras won the National Orchestra Cup in Branson, Missouri. Hansen is also a former Idaho Music Teacher of the Year. Photo Credit and Copyright Idaho Publications.
 

Roger Welch, Artistic Director for the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre accepts the Governor’s Excellence in the Arts award. Having been established in 1967, the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre is the oldest performing arts organization in Idaho. The theatre employees professional talent in the production of 4 full-scale Broadway musicals every summer. The Coeur d’Alene Theatre has 5,000 season ticket holders and 35,000 in annual attendance with a regional economic impact estimated at $4 million. Cynthia Guild Stoetzer receives the Governor’s Excellence in the Arts award. Stoetzer earned her B.F.A. at the California College of Arts and M.F.A. in sculpture at Utah State University. A landscape painter with a primary focus on the Teton Valley, Stoetzer has had shows in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Idaho. Photo Credit and Copyright Idaho Publications.

 

Bicky Gili receives the Governor’s Excellence in the Arts award. Gili is a former dancer and dance instructor. The Idaho Falls native began dancing at the age of four, and at the age of thirteen earned a full scholarship to Ballet West in Salt Lake City. She has been dancing ever since. Gili has danced professionally with Chicago Ballet and Ballet Folk. Gili choreographed pieces for the Idaho Falls Symphony and Idaho Falls Opera Theatre. John Collias, receives the Governor's Excellence in the Arts award. Collias has been a professional artist for 65 years. He is a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute. For 33 years Collias drew the weekly “Portrait of a distinguished Citizen” for the Idaho Statesman. During that period of time he produced at least 1,700 portraits for the newspaper. The series was discontinued when a new managing editor from New York blew in and snuffed the series. For over three decades Collias drew portraits of Idaho’s Governors. Horace Axtell, a Nez Perce tribal historian, language preservationist, storyteller, drum-maker, and singer receives the Governor’s Lifetime Achievement award. Axtell spent his youth listening to and learning from tribal elders, some of who had survived the 1877 Nez Perce War resulting from President Ulysses S. Grant’s attempts to clear the Nez Perce homeland. Now a respected elder himself, Axtell has passed along his knowledge and skills through the Idaho Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. In 1977, Axtell’s memoir, A Little Bit of Wisdom: Conversations With a Nez Perce Elder, published by Confluence Press and recently reprinted by the University of Oklahoma Press, became the first printed memoir of a Nez Perce elder in more than 50 years.  His efforts to pass along his cultural heritage have been recognized with the Washington State Historical Society Peace and Friendship Award, an honorary doctorate from Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, and the President’s Medallion from the University of Idaho. In September, Axtell traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship award in a public ceremony and concert. Photo Credit and Copyright Idaho Publications.

Boise State University  October 8, 2008

The Governor delivers a proclamation for Learn & Serve Challenge Week at Boise State University. The Governor spoke to approximately 75 elementary and high school students from the Magic and Treasure Valleys. He spoke about the importance of service learning. Service learning is an effective teaching method that combines service to the community with curriculum based training.

Syringa Network  October 9, 2008

The Governor is welcomed by Brent Stacey, the President of the Idaho Regional Optical Network (IRON), and Chief Information Officer for the Idaho National Laboratory to the Syringa Network. IRON is an Idaho-owned telecommunications fiber optic infrastructure asset created to deliver very high speed connections (10 million bits per second to 10 billion bits per second) to the internet, the nation and the world.

The Governor spoke to almost 200 people attending the Hunger Awareness Summit at the Double Tree Riverside in Boise.

 

Asian Trade Mission  October 11 - 22, 2008

Governor met with officials and toured wheat importer Binh Dong Flour Mill.

IEAT is the largest organization of companies conducting international trade in Taiwan and has sent multiple buying delegations to Idaho over the last ten years.

The Governor presented 20 "Idaho Valued Partner Awards" during the mission, 17 of the 20 were given in Taiwan

 

Governor Otter, Paul Haacke, Vice President of International Business for Melaleuca, inc. and Fiona Ho, General Manager of Melaleuca -Hong Kong, meet with Dr. Lam Ping Yan, Director of the Hong Kong Department of Health and senior officials from the Health Department.

 

Governor Otter conducted a one hour interview on international Community Radio Taipei (ICRT), Taiwan's only English-speaking radio station. The interview highlighted Idaho trade, investment, tourism, and higher education opportunities. Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter spoke on Wednesday, October 29th, to students in Gary Moncrief's Political Science 102 class, State and Local Government. Gov. Otter focused this talk on the role of the governor and the specific duties and powers of the office, as well as the need to find a fix for the state's transportation budget.
